Maniye hides a deadly secret. Her father is the chieftan of the Wolf clan, whose members can shift into wolves. Her mother was the queen of the Tiger clan, whose members can take the form of a tiger. Maniye can become both. These tribes have been enemies for generations, and Maniye is an outcast. Refusing to disown half her soul, she escapes – rescuing a prisoner of her father's clan in the process. Broken Axe, a killer, is set on their trail to drag them back to retribution. Her father plots to rule the north, and controlling Maniye is crucial to his scheme . . . Across the land, other tribes prepare for strife. Strangers from the far south appear, seeking allies in their own conflict. Priests foresee danger, predicting a darkness shall fall across the land.
